Human Rights

NewFields Human Rights Assessment Group offers a complete set of human rights services. Human Rights is emerging as an area of crucial interest for companies operating in areas of the world where social, environmental, health, labor and other issues are increasingly uniting under the label of "Human Rights". Companies' actions are being measured against their own human rights policies and against the standards of multi-sector, multi-national associations and organizations. Too often in the Human Rights arena, praise and criticism are based on subjective "soft" analyses. The Human Rights Assessment Group values data and methodologies which are measurable and defensible. We strive to work inductively from what can be known to actions and policies with clear objective foundations which enable their success or failure to be measured and evaluated.

The Human Rights Assessment Group is a multidisciplinary team of professionals who can explain the needs and benefits of a human rights-based analysis during a project's planning, operations and post-closure phases. Among the services related to, or informed by, human rights, we can:

  • Conduct a formal Human Rights Impact Assessment under international standards for prospective projects
  • Conduct Human Rights Impact Assessments under international standards for an ongoing operation ("GIS"),
  • Determine the need or advantage of preparing a Human Rights Impact Assessment for a particular project
  • Critique Human Rights Impact Assessments performed on a project by government or interest groups
  • Creation of human rights policies and procedures to comply with internal or external corporate commitments
  • Periodic assessment and reporting on progress towards a company's human rights goals
  • Assist in a corporate human rights crisis, such as civil disturbance or litigation, or before a national Human Rights Commission
  • Engage in confidential internal assessments of particular human rights issues in a conflict zone or sensitive region
  • Recommend mitigation of human rights impacts, as well as ongoing monitoring of the operational responses
  • Project-specific or company-wide advice on human rights, reporting, metrics and internal and external communication
