NewFields Environmental Forensics Practice specializes in matters that pertain to investigations of the nature, source(s), degree, and fate of contamination in the environment. Environmental forensics investigations are carried out through detailed chemical characterization of site- or incident-related contamination, followed by studies of its commercial production, disposal or accidental release, alteration over time, and transport within a study area. An important step in environmental forensics investigations is integration of detailed site assessment data with a site’s operational and regulatory histories and/or a specific incident’s facts. This data is synthesized to develop a conceptual model that describes the relationships of contamination to a potential source(s) and responsible party(s).

NewFields consultants have applied principles of environmental forensics at a wide range of industrial sites and contaminated sediments proximal to oil and gas exploration facilities, oil refineries, bulk fuel storage facilities, retail gasoline stations, crude oil and fuel pipelines, former manufactured gas plants, rail yards, wood treating facilities, and chemical manufacturing plants. Marine and freshwater oil spill assessments around the world, , are also an important part of our practice. Because our team brings a strong background in chemical laboratory practices, we are often called upon to conduct laboratory based research and development studies, data quality assessments and laboratory fitness reviews.

The goal of our Practice is the delivery of the highest quality science and defensible expert consulting in environmental forensics and chemistry. Our Practice brings together a talented, experienced, and integrated team of environmental forensic sciences experts who operate in a nimble, responsive, and cost-effective manner.
