Nutrient and Salinity Management

Our salinity and nutrient management expertise includes:

  • Soil/water/plant nutrient management
  • Salt, nutrient, and other specific ion/element/compound balances and planning
  • BMP development and assessment
  • Sampling, analysis, and interpretation of fate and transport
  • Greenhouse gas accounting
  • Beneficial reuse of solids and wastewaters
  • Animal waste management
  • Regulatory coordination

Elevated nutrients and salinity in surface water and groundwater are concerns in much of the western United States and in many other areas of the world. As surface and groundwater supplies become more efficiently used and as wastewater streams become more concentrated, nutrient and salinity impairments are occurring with greater frequency and magnitude. NewFields scientists and technologists have broad salinity and nutrient management experience, including development of salt and nutrient balances at root-zone, field, system, and basin scales. Our staff has extensive experience working throughout the western United States and abroad on analysis and management of irrigation water and return flows, water resources, non-point source management, and salt, nutrient, and trace mineral fate and transport. We are also familiar with agricultural and regulatory stakeholders.

NewFields also has experience in comprehensive assessment of greenhouse gas flux from a broad range of landscape and agricultural systems. We work with biogeochemical models to evaluate the sequestration or production of multiple greenhouse gases given management efforts, climatic conditions and associated soil and plant growth processes. The result is the ability to identify measures for optimization of stored carbon stocks, and the ability to understand the potential market and ecosystem values. Regardless of the particular focus, our teams seek practical and sustainable solutions within agriculture, urban, and rural lands to protect sensitive resources as well as production values.
